Two Lessig videos
If you haven’t seen it yet, the Oyez Project has a video of Lessig’s presentation (MPEG-4) to the Clio Society here at Northwestern in April 2003 posted on their page for creative commons. It’s really a spectacular intro to all things Lessig and copyleft. I highly recommend watching it.
Boing Boing reports on Lessig’s comments at the Creative Commons 2nd Anniversary party responding to Gates’ “communist” remark and provides a link to the video. Lessig certainly didn’t hold back when writing on his blog yesterday. Tim Armstong also added some interesting comments on his blog:
What makes “free” and “open” software free and open is not community goodwill, but legally mandated openness secured through privately imposed licenses. Open-source software is exactly the same as proprietary software in this respect: in both cases, the software is licensed for use on terms that the licensor intends to be legally enforceable in the event of violation by the user. The content of those terms is different, but the underlying principle of respect for the proprietary wishes of the licensor is not.
